Advanced Kayaking
Step into the world of enclosed sea kayaks! Learn the skills needed to have fun surfing the waves with other kayakers on the coast, or access secluded waterways, and which also help you advance into whitewater kayaking.
Appropriate for those with prior kayaking experience. With this more intensive course designed to prepare students for exploring the open ocean, you’ll gain better control of your kayak and paddling technique. As the base for learning whitewater techniques, these skills, besides making wilder areas of nature more accessible via kayak, will also help you enjoy taking on bodies of water with dynamic currents safely.
This class reviews basic strokes and rescues, as well as covers more advanced control techniques such as ruddering, bracing, and edging. In other words, you’ll build your skills and confidence level so that you can move onto rolling.
- Enclosed Kayak Fundamentals – Entering & Exiting, Wet Exit, Paddle Strokes
- Basic Knowledge of Tides & Currents
- Boat Edging, Bracing, Paddle Float Re-Entry, T-Rescue
- Safety & Responsible Kayaking, and more…
What to Bring
Students should bring comfortable clothes, a bathing suit, a jacket or fleece, a towel and change of clothes, lots of sun protection, a lanyard to secure their glasses around their heads, and a reusable water bottle. Athletic shoes may be worn, or students may prefer to wear shoes or sandals that can be worn in the water (such as water shoes/aqua socks or Keen sandals).
Important: Please arrive 10-15 minutes before your class to check in.
Kayak Polo Club and Lessons
If you want to flex your advanced kayaking skills even more, kayak polo activities are also available at Shoreline Lake. (A cross between water polo, basketball and hockey, this unique, fun, and dynamic sport makes for a great overall challenge.)
In addition to the internationally competitive Bay Area Kayak Polo Club practicing here, we offer private lessons, as well as team building. To arrange private lessons, or for a schedule of BAKPC organized games/competitions here at the lake, please call the Boathouse at: (650) 965-7474.
